DEMOCRACY UNDER THREAT

NEW AGE EDITORIAL DT 20-12-15
The efforts, made by prime minister in his madness to concentrate all the powers in the PMO and to become arbitrator in everything, have become a serious threat for the very democratic set up we have cherished all these years since independence. The CBI raids on the Delhi secretariat, locking and launching a search of the chief minister Arvind Kejriwal’s office, are not just the violation of federal principles enshrined in the Constitution of the country but also form part of the dangerous game of destroying the democracy that prime minister is playing since the day one of assumption of office.
The political resolution adopted by the Puducherry Congress of the CPI in March 2015 has in so many words cautioned that Narendra Modi has an authoritarian bent of mind and with his commitment for Hindutva and Corporate Capital he will do all that may destroy the country’s secular democratic fabric and set-up . It will pave way for a fascistic take over. Past 19 months have witnessed all sorts of moves and actions that strengthen the apprehension.
Since his days as chief minister of Gujarat, Modi never allowed the state legislature to function normally. Not only the sessions of assembly were curtailed but he created a record of remaining away from the assembly. He preferred to work through coterie of his loyalists. Amit Shah, the BJP president, was king pin then also. He continued with the same style here at national level. If encounter and killings of rivals, even of his own party men who disagreed with him were the main tools of his bid for authoritarian regime, blackmail and misuse of all oppressive organs of the state are main weapons that are being blatantly used. Even within the party, these tools have been used forcing the veterans of the party to voice their concern after the humiliation faced by the BJP in Bihar assembly elections.
There are several indications of blackmail, particularly of the political parties that have still not surrendered to the NDA. We all know that most of the bourgeois political parties and their leaders get involved in corruption cases when in power. Later the new ruling combination uses investigation in such cases to blackmail them. It happened in the times when UPA-II was in power also. But it is becoming hall mark of the present regime headed by Narendra Modi.
The present controversy on raids on Delhi government’s secretariat smacks of the same trend. For supposed crimes committed a decade ago by an IAS officer, in place of searching the concerned departments, the chief minister’s office has been targeted. Kajriwal’s allegation that the CBI was actually looking for the enquiry report in corruption and irregularities that were committed by Delhi Cricket Association when finance minister Arun Jaitley was its wholesale administrator have some meat. The money involved is in hundreds of crores. Obviously the Modi regime wanted to unarm the Delhi rulers using the same trick that it has been applying against number of political opponents including Congress.
One does not know where the current controversy will lead to, but one thing is clear that it will have very serious consequences for our federal structure and ultimately threaten the very continuance of democratic set-up. Raiding the headquarters of a state government is violation of the federal structure assumed in the Constitution.
Unfortunately, the Media that is supposed to be the fourth pillar of democracy has been fully taken over by the forces whose interest the present regime serves. In place of taking up the real dangers faced by the country, it is playing the role of distracter of people’s attention from the core issues. Country’s economy is in peril. All economic indicators show decline. Unprecedented price rise is heaping new burden on the people. The nominal facilities on the front of education and public health are being snatched away. Real wages are declining. But these are no issues for Media to focus on. One can attribute these to their class orientation, but ignoring or deliberately side tracking the Modi regime’s bid to impose an individual’s authoritarianism by destroying the basic features of federalism and secular democracy is a crime for which the entire nation has to pay heavily.
It is high time the real threats posed by the Modi regime is comprehended and resisted in time.
